In Kindergarten, Presidio Hill School students embark on an academic journey that honors their youthful exuberance. They build a caring community in which they actively explore concepts and topics of interest. They begin to recognize and develop their own voices for examining and thinking critically about what they are learning.
From writing their own stories to participating in hands-on math activities; from studying plant and animal life cycles to experiments with liquids and solids; from reading folk tales, myths, and legends to exploring their own family's cultural heritage, Kindergarten students are engaged in learning about themselves and the world around them.
Encouraging flexible thinking through the study of math challenges students to find different ways to approach and solve math problems. Working with fun materials such as pattern blocks, tangrams, unit blocks, measuring tools, and other items, provides hands-on experience with basic math concepts. The exploration of rivers, oceans, deserts, and mountains provides a lesson in basic geology, while field trips and special visitors to the classroom enhance the integrated Kindergarten curriculum.
Students explore the intersection of literature, art, and identity in the unit The Color of Us.The Color of Us by Karen Katz is an inspiration
for a Kindergarten activity in which students learn how to mix paint in order
to match the color of their skin. In the story, a seven-year-old girl named
Lena is taught by her mom how to mix red, yellow, black, and white paints to make shades of brown that
match their skin colors. Read more.
