Spaceships. Castles. Egyptian mummies. Second grade is an adventure in imagination and learning. Continuing to build on the foundation established in first grade, second graders enjoy creatively applying their knowledge to new challenges while expanding their understanding of concepts and interconnections.
Reading comprehension and fluency are emphasized as students are introduced to fiction and non-fiction writing, enjoying stories and poetry, maintaining science logs and journals. The transition from "best guess" spelling to more conventional spelling continues in second grade. In math, students learn to apply computation skills to solve problems. Place value, regrouping, telling time, measuring, and money skills are taught using concrete materials and through games and special activities.
An emphasis on interconnections helps student grasp how one thing leads to another as they explore science and social studies topics such as endangered animals, weather, the rain forest, and Mayan and Aztec civilizations. The science/social studies units incorporate art and music as well as provide time for students to teach one another through report writing and presentations.
