Humanities
Students explore modern world history and
cultures, beginning the year with an in-depth study of identity and community,
followed by curricular investigations of Native Americans and Yosemite National
Park in preparation for a three-day trip to Yosemite. Students also explore
areas such as Latin America, South Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia. Readings, role-plays, and research projects form the basis of their
examination of government systems, comparative religion, globalization, and
international development. Students study grammar and practice expository and
creative writing through Writer’s Workshop.
Math
Collaborative learning, mathematical reasoning, and effective communication of ideas are emphasized in seventh grade math. Students explore eight dynamic, real world thematic modules, including: number sense, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics and probability. Each module culminates in students completing a project synthesizing learned skills and showcasing their knowledge. Projects are a creative, multidimensional way for students to expand their appreciation of mathematics and its applications. Students also strengthen skills and understanding with the "Problem of the Week," or POW. Read more.
Science
Life science, with a concentration on human biology systems and botany, is the focus of seventh grade science. Students apply laboratory methods and create models to enhance understanding of cells, genetics, circulation, respiratory and nervous systems. In the spring, students investigate life cycles and adaptations. Students conduct a monitoring project at Mountain Lake Park with the Presidio Park rangers. After generating an original question based on that experience, students create and present a scientific poster exploring that question and providing the answer. As with all classes, curriculum-based field trips enhance the learning experience for students. The Science of Life highlights the neurology and botany units explored by seventh graders. Read more.
