With a rich tradition in diversity, social activism and personal responsibility, Presidio Hill School values community service learning, which is integrated into every grade level. Students adopt a developmentally appropriate theme directly linked to classroom curriculum. As students move through the grades, their understanding of community broadens and by the time they reach middle school, students are aware of their role as citizens of a global world.
In the lower grades students learn about the importance of caring for the more immediate classroom and school community. They learn about recycling and composting, explore habitats around us and care for the school gardens. Fourth graders address aging; fifth graders learn about hunger and homelessness. Field trips and community outreach opportunities enhance classroom learning.
Sixth and seventh graders tackle pollution and learn how to care for and protect native plants and animals. By eighth grade, students are expected to draw from their diverse experiences and broad knowledge of social issues to create their own community service projects. Middle school outreach includes volunteering at Glide and educating the Presidio Hill School community to the needs of others in the Bay Area.
The Green Roof Club and the Leadership-Ecology-Action-Fellowship, (LEAF) programs are also service-oriented programs providing students with the opportunity to participate in and support the broader community of the Bay Area.
