As part of Presidio Hill School's commitment to environmental education and sustainability, the school has established programs to engage students in organic gardening, habitat restoration and other "green" projects.
One such activity is The Green Roof Garden Club. An elective in the middle school, the club engages students in the planning and maintenance of the school's rooftop organic garden. Club members also participate in gardening projects around the Bay Area and maintain a blog about the work they are doing.
Establishing a weekly waste-free lunch is another way Presidio Hill helps educate students to the importance of making choices that support environmental sustainability. Every Wednesday, students are encouraged to bring a waste-free lunch—that is a lunch that creates no trash. Recyclable containers, reusable eating utensils and compostable leftovers all the rule for the day.
Presidio Hill School also has an environmental outreach program known as the LEAF Academy (LEAF stands for: Leadership, Ecology, Action, Fellowship.) Established to provide students from Presidio Hill and other area schools an opportunity to "make a difference" as they explore ecological systems and discover what makes those systems function well. Students work in teams to develop ideas to make their own community eco-systems work more effectively. Visit the LEAF Academy website for more information or contact Rachel Brand, 415-751-9318 x206.
