Last night’s People in Profile performance by our third and fourth-graders is such a wonderful example of Presidio Hill at our finest. The interdisciplinary nature of the teaching and learning that goes into this performance highlights the value of students learning across disciplines. Students were poised actors demonstrating an amazing depth of information about historical figures in dramatic, engaging and humorous performances. The children exhibited tremendous support and respect for one another as they helped each other with final rehearsals, donned costumes and make-up, and managed stage fright.
This culminating theatrical extravaganza is the end result of a deeply integrated unit of study involving traditional research skills, reading comprehension, history, organization, art, drama and more. In the past several weeks students have conducted research using books, internet and video sources. The fourth-graders learn more about formal outlining, building on the work done in third grade on paragraph structure. All students engage in critical thinking as they work to identify and synthesize salient information about their assigned person. The Biography Altars are creative examples of many different artistic skills coming together to tell the story of an individual’s life. I am always so impressed with both the richness of the learning and the deep level of engagement and motivation students have for this project.
