From the middle school dean 03-03-06
Ivy Chen, an independently contracted health educator, has worked with Presidio Hill for a number of years and will return in a couple of weeks to meet with our sixth graders for a week of puberty education. Puberty education for 5th and 6th grade students will take place on Monday, March 20 – Friday, March 24.The topics covered in the sixth grade curriculum include:
- Review of physical puberty changes.
- Emotional changes of puberty: feeling self-conscious, forming positive body image, mood changes, dealing constructively with anger & sadness.
- Social changes:
- Changing relationships with friends, peer pressure, refusal skills: how to say no and keep your friends.
- Media portrayal of men & women in magazine advertisements. How these images affect body image.
- Personal space and respect for others: types of sexual harassment, how it makes someone feel to be harassed and what to do about it.
- Crushes, sexual thoughts & feelings.
- Resources: whom can you turn to if you have questions or concerns?
The high school admission process is coming to a close and families can expect to receive most admissions decisions on Friday, March 17. Please review the high school placement column in this letter for more information and some practical ideas on how to navigate the next phase of the admissions process.
Middle school closings: Classes are cancelled on Friday, March 17th (Faculty Work Day) and Friday, March 31 (Staff In-Service).
Parent Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, April 6, 1:30 – 6:00 p.m. and Friday, April 7, 9:00 – 4:00 p.m. Parents will receive a copy of the spring semester evaluations the week of March 27th. To register for a parent conference with your child’s advisor please use the conference binder located at the front desk. Please contact your child’s advisor for additional information.
