From Ann Meissner

Next week in the middle school and fifth grade is sex and puberty education week with Ivy Chen. Tuesday night while many people were glued to the television watching election returns, a few parents and staff gathered together to learn from sex and puberty educator, Ivy Chin, about talking with kids about these important and sensitive topics. Ivy has been teaching a week-long workshop to our fifth through eighth grades for many years. It is an annual event the students look forward to in part for the content, and in part due to Ivy’s open, humorous, and knowledgeable approach to this subject that sends many adults running for cover. Below are the written materials Ivy shared with us.

Ninety Years of Poetry at PHS
by Erainya Neirro

My academic background was focused on science and mathematics, but I was also very fortunate to have professors who revered and revealed the essence of the poetic image, so it is quite a wonderful coincidence that I came to PHS, a school established by poets and artists, Helen Salz and Flora J. Arnstein. I was quite familiar with Mrs. Arnstein’s poetry, and I was honored to have her visit my classroom many years ago when she shared some of her writing and told my students about her experience during the Great Earthquake.

Just this year, I was introduced to the poetry of Helen Salz, who I had thought was primarily a visual artist, but she was also a fine poet. Here is a sample from 1918:

INDECISION

By Helen Salz

His eyes are watery and his voice
is loud.
His brows are furry
and his nose is proud.
Impotently he twists and twists
his hands.
Rooted in forked fallacies
he stands.

During the past two years, I have had an opportunity to learn more about how to inspire poetic writing in my students from gifted poet, teacher, and PHS parent Susan Gevirtz. She has generously conducted several workshops for my students, and this year focused on the theme of self-discovery.  Below you will see a group poem that I constructed from lines taken from the poems of my fourth graders during their work with Susan. These poems were written as they examined self-portraits and thought about the elements that make them unique. I found it quite fascinating to compare the writing of my students today to that of Mrs. Salz ninety years ago. I see some commonality, perhaps you will also.

Musings on a Self-Portrait
By the Fourth Grade Class of 2008

When my eyes grow large,
yours grow large, they imitate me
like a baby learning how to walk

The eyes that want to close and
Stop Stop that badness
And start the love goodness.

Wondering how you get out, trying
My sight struggling
trying to get out, still

Your happiness depends on a different life.
You YELL the secret behind your gaze

You mumble raspilly, the secret behind your stare
like hail hitting a car window

Your mouth like a family picture
Your voice like a dog barking
deep in the heart

My mouth is unexcited
I am a tiger trapped in a zoo

Your mouth, Nooooo! It’s shut.
It’s like it was glued shut with super glue
If you tell me your secret, well I’m not listening

My mind is full of secrets,
but one is that deep down
I cannot say

You, your hair waving like the waves
going back and forth, back and forth

You, dweller of the sea
Sculpting and Forming
the sea and its dwellers

Your anger plays with good judgment
Your mouth whispers,
 Anger

The wind I hear is in my mind.
It sounds like a snake I love
Its power saves me.

You are like a fierce storm
You, You, You - are like me
