Staffing update:

We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to interview a number of terrific and highly qualified candidates over the last two months for our staff openings, and we're expecting the hiring process to continue until all positions for next year are filled.

With that said, we have more exciting news to report.  Yabome Kabia has accepted our offer to be the 7th and 8th Grade Math teacher for 2008 - 2009 school year.  Currently, Yabome is the middle school math teacher at KIPP Bay Academy in San Francisco and has worked at the MS/HS 225 (Theater Arts Production Company) in the Bronx, New York.  She has worked as a math teacher for the last five years and has a strong interest and emphasis in
collaborative student work as well as social justice projects.

Please join me in welcoming Yabome to the Presidio Hill School community.

Admissions decision letters will be mailed on Wednesday, March 12. Please bear in mind that the Bay Area admissions directors have agreed not to contact the families in the admissions process during the week that prospective families have to make their decisions. This is known as a "silent week," meaning that parents at PHS are asked to not contact families in the admissions process. If families contact you first, then it is absolutely fine to return their call or email. We are not supposed to initiate contact. Staff News/Hiring Update--March 7, 2008

We are proceeding at a steady and deliberate pace with hiring at PHS!  We have some news for you that we all are very excited about.  Wendy Furry, our former middle school math and science teacher, will be Jennifer Franklin's long-term sub for her maternity leave this spring.  Wendy will also serve as Jennifer's sub next the fall until shortly after Thanksgiving.  Wendy, who has a solid background in middle school curriculum in general, will be working very closely with Jennifer to implement the 7th Grade Humanities curriculum. Wendy has jumped back into the school with both feet, agreeing to chaperone the 8th grade trip with Trevor McNeil and Todd Ditto.  We are also talking with Wendy about being involved with Follies next year.

Also, please join me in congratulating Paola Nou, one of our Spanish teachers, who will be having a baby this summer. We have already begun advertising for a long-term sub for the fall for Paola.  We will begin seeing
candidates soon and having demonstration lessons in a few weeks.

Stay tuned.  More exciting news awaits...

Please contact Amy Pearson, Director of Admissions and Financial Assistance, if you have any questions.

Student Allergies

Dear PHS Community:

Last fall, I asked an ad hoc committee made up of some members of the school’s safety committee as well as Board members, other staff, and parents with a particular expertise (medical, legal, etc.) to look at the school’s current allergy and asthma policy that we now have in place.

The objective of this work is to make sure that we are doing all that we can do to keep all of our student’s safe and to look at best practices in the field, specifically as it relates to food and pet allergies as well as asthma prevention.  Eventually, the committee will make a recommendation to me about next steps.  Whatever those recommendations or next steps are, we will do our best to keep the entire community’s needs in mind, particularly if their recommendations means a fundamental change in the policy. We see next year as a transition and planning year in regards to the allergy and asthma policy with new methods overlapping with the policy that we currently have.  Therefore, a new or updated policy will not take place until the 2009 – 2010 school year to give current members of the school community time to adjust or to consider other educational options.

Enclosed with this letter is the request from the committee to gather feedback from the larger community with regards to their work.  (The letter is also available in its entirety after the "Continue Reading" link.)

If you have any questions or comments on the process of a general nature, please feel to contact one of the ad hoc committee members listed in the attached letter.

Download the Allergy Letter from the Committee (readable online after the link)

Download the draft guidelines

Sincerely,

Brian Thomas,
Director

To the PHS Community,

We are writing to inform the PHS community that a working committee has been formed in order to review and advise on a comprehensive allergy and asthma protocol for the school.  We have brought various backgrounds to the table and have begun the process of reviewing the pertinent medical, social, legal, and educational data.

The current PHS policies on allergies (food and pets) and asthma prevention and management were created based on the perceived needs and concerns at the time. Now that we have had some time and have researched best practices with regards to children with allergies in schools, we would like to revisit our policies. In order to have a comprehensive and safe policy we are reviewing a number of national protocols including "School Guidelines for Managing Students with Food Allergies" published by the National School Board Assoc., the Food Allergy Network, the National Associations of Elementary and Secondary School principals and the National Association of School Nurses. A large number of schools have adapted this document for their use, and we will be looking to see how it would work at PHS.

As always we will attempt to be inclusive and respectful of the varied ideas and experiences of the PHS community. Our overreaching goal is to establish a consistent, effective, safe, and medically sound protocol for children with allergies and asthma. As with other PHS endeavors we hope to offer a plan that is a result of open inquiry and careful consideration.

We ask for your help in providing relevant information to the working group. Based on a studied evaluation we are hoping to recommend a comprehensive protocol that fosters the students’ active and responsible participation in their world.   We are confident that, as other schools have adopted safe policies, PHS can also work with students, parents, and physicians to minimize risks and provide a safe educational environment for all students.

We are posting information in the lobby for those who are interested in seeing the articles we have used, as well as some forms we are considering.

Thank you.

PHS Snow Day 2-15-2008

patty%20for%20web.jpg

Snow Day 2008
Friday, February 29th

Dear PHS Families,

PHS will be celebrating our traditional leap year Snow Day (San Francisco style), February 29 from 1:35-2:50.  No, your child will not be staying home that day. Instead, we will provide poetry, science, literature, and cross grade community building activities centered on the theme of snow & winter.

We  would like your help with this fun and educational day. Here are some things you can do to help:

1.    Send your child in “snow” outerwear and layers. (sweaters, gloves, goggles, snowsuit, hats, boots, or whatever you have that would be fun)  Please label everything.

2.    We will be creating a snow globe museum in the library. Please send in any Snow Globes that you might have at home in to your child’s classroom starting Monday, February 25. Label them on the bottom with your name and “touch or no touch”. You can download the directions for making your own snow globes by clicking here.

3.    Volunteer to help the parent association support our day.

Thank you,
Patty

books.gifPHS Book Fair – Save the Date – Thursday evening, November 15th.
The annual PHS Book Fair to support the Presidio Hill School Library will be held at Books, Inc. in Laurel Village from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Free child care is available if you contact Raymi at ext. 130.  Come shop for the holidays, and don’t forget to pick up a few books for yourself! You can also purchase pre-selected books to donate directly to the library. Free wine and yummy treats will be served. See you there! Please contact Lisa J. for more information.   PHS Cookbooks: What San Francisco Families Eat will also be sold!! Now's the time to get your holiday copies!!!

PHS Book Fair - READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
Hello, Fellow PHS Parents. Would you like to share the titles of any great books you’ve read recently? The Book Fair is coming next week and I would like to compile a list of books that have been read and enjoyed by PHS parents in the last year. Any category. Any subject. If you have a book to recommend, please send the name of the book, and the name of the author, to wbonham@aol.com. If you have time to add a sentence or two of praise for your recommendations, that would be welcome as well. I’ll be compiling your suggestions into a list and distribute it to everyone at the Book Fair.
Thanks,
Bill Bonham (Christopher, 8th grade.)

PHS Book Fair - Here are two ways to bring more books into our children's lives:
1) There are shelves at Books, Inc, filled with books selected by Lisa J, our librarian, for the SCHOOL LIBRARY.
Each book you buy from these shelves goes directly to our children. Here's an idea: Friends and even whole classes form "buying blocks" and purchase books for the school.
2) Shop at Books Inc during these hours and the library receives 20 percent of all your purchases. Do your holiday gift buying on the 15th and help support our library.

We look forward to seeing you there on the 15th, 6 - 9 p.m. We'll have wine and food as well.
Remember: There is FREE childcare during this event at PHS -- ring Raymi at ext. 130 to reserve.
ALL BEST: THE BOOK FAIR TEAM

Walkathon
Dear PHS Community,:
Last Friday, we had a great time raising money and awareness for the school and for financial assitance during this year's Walkathon at Julius Kahn Park.  The Walkathon chairs, parent volunteers, and students "stepped up to the plate" to brave the elements and raise nearly $30,000 (and counting!!) for PHS.  We would like to thank all the volunteers and staff who came together to make this event happen.  We would also like to thank all the student philanthropist who always are thinking about making the world in which they live a better place!
