Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at PHS

Proudly progressive, Presidio Hill School was founded upon principles of diversity and inclusion. For over 100 years, Presidio Hill School has brought together students, families, and educators with different backgrounds, experiences, and ideas. Presidio Hill School strongly affirms our longstanding commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the predominantly white world of independent schools; we must continue to take an active stance in working toward social justice. It is critical to examine how our systems perpetuate white supremacy culture–regardless of intention–including the impact of excluding and harming people of color and other underrepresented and marginalized groups. Social justice work and the act of examining our own power and privilege are ongoing processes, both personally and institutionally.

Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Mission Statement:

Presidio Hill School celebrates the care and mutual respect we have for one another as a diverse community of learners. We commit to the active practices of anti-racism, facilitating inclusion and belonging, and working toward social and environmental justice, both at school and in our own lives. We embrace critical conversations and opportunities for action and we will continue to support and uplift each other as we work together to build solidarity and create a more just and equitable world.

Our Shared Vision:

Presidio Hill School strives to teach and practice equity and inclusion so that students examine and appreciate multiple perspectives and learn skills to enact positive change in the world. Our school curriculum must lead with a social justice lens across content areas and challenge historical and current systems of oppression with as much intention as we apply to academic skills. We believe this knowledge is as vital in the classroom as it is in life. Presidio Hill continues to integrate principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the personal, interpersonal, cultural, and institutional levels.

Presidio Hill’s diversity, equity, and inclusion values empower students, staff, families, and community members to become active agents of change both during their time at PHS and beyond. We envision a more equitable, democratic, and empathetic world with PHS students as co-creators of what is right and just. We honor the inherent worth of each member of the PHS community; community members are supported, uplifted, and encouraged to express their authentic and multidimensional identities.

Our Core Values and Philosophy:

  • Commitment/Responsibility & Accountability
  • Authenticity & Belonging
  • Awareness & Action

Presidio Hill School recognizes diversity as inclusive of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender identity, sexual orientation, family structure, neurodiverse learning styles, age, ability, nationality, immigration status, physical appearance, religion, belief systems, language, and more. Furthermore, we understand that many of our students and community members hold intersecting and multiple identities, which are both personally and socially constructed. We value and honor differences and strive to create an environment where students, families, and staff can bring their full selves to school each day.

We intentionally center diversity, equity, and inclusion in our hiring and retention practices, outreach and enrollment efforts, and student and family support initiatives.
