Mountain Lake

Mountain Lake Partnership - Established in 2000

A 20-minute walk from campus is the only natural freshwater lake in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and one of the last remaining natural lakes in San Francisco. Our Partnership established 18 years ago, with Presidio Trust Biologists, provides our students the opportunity to work alongside field biologists conducting real-time scientific monitoring. As the lake is being restored, Presidio Hill's seventh-graders study the ecosystem, participate in wetland restoration service, and most of all - do real science. - Last year students learned to use telemetry devices to track and study the health of newly introduced native western pond turtles.

Currently the class is joining the California Phenology Project. Throughout the year, students examine native plant profiles specifically identified and tagged as part of the Mountain Lake climate change pilot program. learn more at https://cpp.usanpn.org/

These principles of ecology are opportunities for our students to better understand the systems approach to science, the importance of biodiversity, and the interconnectedness between natural and human communities.
