PHS 8th Graders Rock the Boat!
To apply what they learned about density, buoyancy, and Newton's Laws of Motion, some 8th graders opted to construct a cardboard boat that can float one paddler. The students tested prototypes at the Presidio YMCA pool on Thursday, with some exciting results, which will inform their final design.
During the one-hour construction challenge on Friday at Six Flags Great America, they will compete against each other and teams from other Bay Area middle schools to make a functional boat and race it across Boomerang Bay. Other students will compete in the trebuchet and model roller coaster challenges, and all will calculate acceleration and changes in kinetic and potential energy on the amusement park rides. Go, PHS Dragons!
