PHS Middle School Students Serve at GLIDE
This spring, PHS middle school students had the chance to serve at the Glide Memorial Church on three trips. Glide serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner to San Francisco community members who need a meal 364 days a year and 60 percent of their work is provided by volunteers. PHS' latest trip included a mix of sixth and eighth-grade students- both veterans and newcomers. The students and staff members were greeted at the venue by Amar, the volunteer coordinator, who discussed with them the meaning of SROs (single room occupancies), food deserts, and subsidized housing, to give them context for the clients they would be serving. Students spent the rest of the trip serving lunch--a hectic two hours that involved food prep, assembling and delivering trays, and clean up. It was another great field trip and learning opportunity!
