TK & K "Garden Guardians"

Friday, September 17, 2021

Our youngest students in Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten have taken on the role of "guardians" of the lower yard garden. Together with Maria, our PHS gardening teacher, the students planted a variety of leafy greens, vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

Our small but mighty gardeners meet weekly to practice identifying and pulling weeds as well as teasing, or loosening, roots of starters before planting. Their vegetable garden contains arugula, green onion, napa or Chinese cabbage, green leaf lettuce, and radish. At the end of each class, the students smell and taste a new plant. In doing so, the students are encouraged to explore and try new foods, use descriptive language to describe their experiences, and have a stronger sense of ownership over the garden space.

By the end of the year, we hope that all of our garden guardians feel comfortable getting their hands dirty, are more inclined to try new vegetables, and have a sense of the growing and harvesting cycles.
